I have mixed feelings about this one. It was dark and gritty and brutal, the characters were deep and intense, but I feel like it should have been about 100 pages shorter. This is what I’ve come to term a ‘literary thriller’, where the author bogs down the pacing with all the wonderfully crafted words he wants you to read. The problem is that it slows the suspense. I find it irritating.
I would have liked the characters better if the author spent less time in their heads. I have no desire to read another in the series to get to know them better. However, despite all the parts I could have lived without, I got through it and enjoyed the plot. 4.5 stars.
