Wayward Pines (3 Book Series) by Blake CrouchI’m not big on sci-fi, but after watching the TV series, it left me wondering about the book. I had read, and enjoyed, Dark Matter, also by this author, so I knew I liked his writing style and that he told a good tale. Then I got a cheap Kindle offer for the series.  And, finally (can it really be almost 2 years later???), I got around to the actual reading part.

After putting it off for so long, one word comes to mind. Why???? I loved this series! I’m not sure if it was more enjoyable because I had watched the miniseries or not, but, thanks to some extra time over Thanksgiving, I read the second and third book in less than 24 hours. I’m kind of sad now that it’s over.

Even if you aren’t a huge sci-fi fan, there’s enough mystery, suspense and action in this series to keep you reading. I didn’t want to put the books down until I found out what happened. The stakes were high and it all happened so fast! 5 stars!

The Great Zoo of China by Mathew Reilly ~ Fiction Book Review

wpb19Australian author Mathew Reilly has once again delivered a book so full of action that it leaves the reader breathless. I’ve always enjoyed a fast paced adventure novel. Jurassic Park will  always be one of my favorite books, and the book that inspired me to be a writer. To be able to imagine such ideas, to create an entire fictional world in which to house your readers – how incredible is that? Reilly also cites Jurassic Park as his favorite book, and in true dino-might style, this book is an homage to making fantastical fiction more believable with science and well-thought research.

I have just one teeny, tiny complaint. I’ve been a long time fan of Reilly’s, and while I still enjoy his work, my tastes have changed to include works written in a more literature based style. It is these books that I blame for not only making Reilly’s simplistic writing style glaringly apparent, but also at times annoying. I understand that simple sentence structure works best in quick paced action scenes, but some words/descriptions/replies were so overused that they detracted from the story. Other than that, this was a lovely little departure from reality. 4.5 stars, rounded up where necessary.

Relic II: Resurrection by Jonathan Brookes ~ Fiction Review

book17I’ve said it before and  I’ll say it again – I’m a HUGE fan of books that mix fiction with plausible science. And as an Anthropologist (Go Gators!) who spent more than her fair share of time in the paleo trenches, I’m also a sucker for books about Neanderthals. With the continuing influx of new discoveries about this breed, who can resists such a hot topic? I can’t 🙂

Relic II: Resurrection is the second novella in the Relic series by author Jonathan Brooks. While the first installment centers around the attempt to clone the extinct hominid species for military purposes, this book follows the project to fruition – a Neanderthal baby is born – and relays the race to claim rights to the child. It’s a great combination of action and science guaranteed to keep you turning the pages!

The 6th Extinction by James Rollins ~ Fiction Review

book16I’m a HUGE fan of books that mix science and adventure. Ever since I read Jurassic Park for the first time at age 11 and realized that I could lose myself in a thrilling story AND learn science facts that could potentially increase my winnings on Jeopardy, I was sold. That said, I’m a long time reader of James Rollins. I’ve spent the last ten years anxiously awaiting the release of his latest action packed novel.

I must admit, I enjoyed some of his books more than others. His earliest, which are pretty imaginative, have always been my favorites. At some point in his career, he went mainstream. They were always good, but some of his books were kind of heavy on the gun details and military storylines for my tastes.

When I saw the cover of The 6th Extinction, I got really excited, and for good cause. James Rollins is going back to his roots! The author who brought us piranha-frog hybrids (I know it sounds hokey, but I mean, really, how cool would they be!?!?) is planning on bringing us more outrageous plots laced with true history and credible science. This book was great, a wild ride that I thoroughly enjoyed, and I’m sure his next book will be too! Definitely a book to read if you need a quick reminder that reading should be fun!
