Monday (Mini Book Review) Madness

This week I read:

This one held my attention, but to be honest, I liked the idea of the plot better than Swanson’s execution of it. The story was fast-paced and enthralling, but parts fell a little flat for me. I didn’t care for any of the characters and was looking for a twist that would knock my socks off, which didn’t happen, and I found the ending underwhelming. Still, I would recommend it, but with the warning that there are spoilers for more books than just those with the 8 ‘perfect murders’.

ARC Review: The First To Lie by Hank Phillippi Ryan

52383175From Goodreads:

Bestselling and award-winning author and investigative reporter Hank Phillippi Ryan delivers another twisty, thrilling cat and mouse novel of suspense that will have you guessing, and second-guessing, and then gasping with surprise.

We all have our reasons for being who we are—but what if being someone else could get you what you want?

After a devastating betrayal, a young woman sets off on an obsessive path to justice, no matter what dark family secrets are revealed. What she doesn’t know—she isn’t the only one plotting her revenge.

An affluent daughter of privilege. A glamorous manipulative wannabe. A determined reporter, in too deep. A grieving widow who must choose her new reality. Who will be the first to lie? And when the stakes are life and death, do a few lies really matter?

My Review:

Wow!!! Hank has done it again! This suspenseful tale is full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end! Craftily plotted, oozing with suspense, and with just a touch of sinister intentions, this book will have you asking yourself – “Who isn’t lying?”

Great subject matter with a plausible storyline that kept me engaged and enthralled.

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Location, location, location! This one had atmosphere and motives for days, characters to love and hate, and so much suspense I couldn’t put it down! This author plays fair – all the clues are there for the reader to put together, but even if you do, you still won’t know exactly what happened until the end! I enjoyed this one immensely!!!

The Girl I Used to Be
This was an easy, quick paced YA mystery-thriller that kept me turning the pages. A solid read, engaging, but I was left wanting just a little more.

Very simplistic in its style, and a little bumpy in places, but it’s a CLUE pastiche! CLUE!!! After a childhood (and adulthood) spent defending my undefeated CLUE championship title, I feel like there was no way that I couldn’t have loved this book – and I did! Looking forward to the next book in the series!

I didn’t enjoy this one quite as much as The Sundown Motel, but still a solid, suspenseful ghost story. Plenty of atmosphere and mystery made this a hard book to put down!

This week I read:

You may have noticed by now that I love the whole trapped in an isolated situation with a killer trope. This one made for easy reading. While I figured out the who (but not the why) early on, I must say that the author did a great job of handling so many characters – I was able to keep them straight right away, which isn’t always the case. Recommended for readers who want a fun, quick paced, mystery. Not recommended for those who want an intricate, hard to solve mystery.

This is the sequel to The Things You Find In Rockpools, which I loved. While this one was good, the author normalized the MC too much, losing some of the quirky charm that made the first book so appealing. Recommended for readers looking for a fun, if somewhat unbelievable, dual mystery. Not recommended for readers who are driven crazy by typos, etc. – while the first book was clean, this one was in dire need of a good edit. Dire. Need. My head almost exploded.

On audiobook:

This was the second audiobook I’ve finished, and, again, I really wish I’d have read it instead of listening to it (it took me several months to finish). It seemed like a fun YA mystery thriller. There was a lot going on, and I feel I lost a lot in translation with the frequent gaps and breaks I took in listening to this. I liked it enough to read another of her books.

I used to LOVE this author, then her books sort of . . . lost my interest. Really looking forward to seeing if the spark is reignited!

This book was EVERYTHING! I laughed, I cried, and still I want more! Irreverently funny, obscene, and yet at times poignantly deep. Totally not the type of book I typically read, but so worth the departure from my norm. The zombie apocalypse told from the perspective of animals, mainly a crow, as they try to rescue the pets locked in their homes and survive the zombies and changing world. 5 blinding stars! Recommended for everyone, because this is the first book I’ve read this year that makes me feel that way.
43193837
I really enjoyed this one, despite being a bit disappointed by the direction it went. It was quick paced, tensely plotted, and kept my mind racing with thoughts about what must really be going on. Recommended for readers looking for a twisty thriller. Not recommended for readers who want a completely believable tale.

Monday (Mini Book Review) Madness

This week I read:

This one had suspense and intrigue, but I didn’t feel vested in the characters. There were several subplots and plenty of red herrings, but ultimately lacked that little something that would have elevated it from a good mystery thriller to a great one. Recommended for those looking for an easy beach read. Not recommend for those looking for a procedural mystery.
51933429
This one seemed to be almost as much about outgrowing old friendships as it was about the murder mystery. There were lots of directions this one could have gone in, and I liked the way the author kept you guessing about who it was who had been murdered for the first half of the book, but the foreshadowing was a little heavy handed and once I knew who the body belonged to, I knew what had happened except for a subplot that came as a surprise. Recommended for those looking for a mystery set in an interesting locale. Not recommended for readers who want likeable characters.

Monday Book Madness

It was a really good week reading wise. I lucked out and found two awesome books that held my attention!

This week I read:

35065736
Now that it’s over, it seems strange to me how much I loved this book, but I really, really did! I’m usually not a fan of sci-fi or fantasy, and this book had a touch of both, but I didn’t care. I was emotionally invested in the main character and her plight for survival. The suspense and stakes kept me riveted to the page, and the tension kept me reading well into the night. I’ll definitely be looking for more from this author!
46136180
Usually books surrounded by a lot of hype are disappointing, but not this one! I kept seeing rave reviews for this on Litsy, so I decided to jump on the bandwagon – and I’m so glad I did! Suspenseful and well written, this mystery interwoven with a ghost story had all the creeps and chills! A fun escape full of tension and atmosphere!

Bad Moon Rising . . .

I’m thrilled to announce that my story, “Bad Moon Rising,” is available in the July issue of Mystery Weekly Magazine! Mystery Weekly is, in my opinion, the more approachable, hipper, sassier younger cousin of Ellery Queen and Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazines!

If you like short mystery and crime fiction, you should give this magazine a read. If you’re a short fiction writer, this is a market you need to check out! (FYI – it’s a qualifying market for the Mystery Writers of America – so if you’ve got your eye on active membership or that Edgar Award, definitely consider submitting!)

Publication Announcement!

I’m pleased to announce that my short story, “The Heat”, has been purchased by Tough: Crime Stories.

“The Heat” will appear on the ezine in February 2019, and in their published anthology in April!

This piece is a suspenseful mystery, part police procedural, part something more – I’ll let you decide what! I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
